Confirm John Roberts

By Richard Land - Sep 19, 2005 - comment

This Thursday marks a pivotal day in the life of our country as the Senate Judiciary Committee decides whether or not to send Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. to the full Senate for a vote to become the next Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judge Roberts, President Bush’s nominee to replace William H. Rehnquist, who succumbed to thyroid cancer earlier this month, has given every indication that he is a strict-constructionist, original-intent judge in the mold of Associate Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. Roberts made clear in his opening statements before the Senate Judiciary Committee that judges are like umpires—they are commissioned to call the balls and strikes, and ensure everyone plays by the rules. In nearly 22 hours of intense questioning over the course of three days last week, Roberts held his composure, demonstrating calmness while reiterating his intent to faithfully interpret the U.S. Constitution.

We can ill afford to idly stand by as the strikingly partisan Judiciary Committee votes “yes” or “no” on the highly qualified Roberts. We need a justice like Roberts who will be faithful to our Founders’ intent, rather than legislate from the bench. It only takes five people in black robes to determine such crucial issues for our country as abortion, pornography, same-sex “marriage,” and religious liberties. Let’s stand by the President’s nomination and utilize this rare opportunity to help restore sound judgment to our land’s highest Court.

If your senators are on the Senate Judiciary Committee, please call them at the numbers below to urge them to vote for John Roberts.

Even if your senator is not on the Judiciary Committee, your voice is still needed. Please contact your senators and tell them to urge the Judiciary Committee members to vote “yes” on John Roberts.

You can contact your senators by dialing the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. The operator will connect you to your senator’s office or the Senate office of your choice.

Please stand with me by encouraging your senators to confirm John Roberts—for the sake of your future and your children’s future. May God bless you as you do.

  4. And please, do not type in ALL CAPS. It looks like you're screaming at people.

Issues involving pastoral staff or other church members, local Baptist associations or state Baptist conventions are local issues. Therefore the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission cannot and should not address such issues. While we regret we are unable to assist you, we encourage you to seek a biblical resolution of the issue at the local church level.
