Marriage Mayhem in Washington

By Doug Carlson - May 27, 2009 - 1

Same-sex “marriage” is coming to Washington, D.C.—that is, unless Congress says otherwise.

On May 5, the District of Columbia Council gave hearty approval, 12-1, to recognize the “marriages” of same-sex couples performed in other jurisdictions. Under the measure signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty (D), same-sex couples who “marry” in the five states with legalized same-sex “marriage”—Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont—could move to Washington and retain full legal benefits. So could the 18,000 same-sex couples who “wed” last year in California.

But lawmakers on Capitol Hill will render the final judgment. President Obama and Congress, the final authorities on the District’s legislation, have a 30-day window to stop the law from taking effect. Those days are dwindling. If congressional leadership decides not to act during that window, the law automatically takes effect. In other words, failure to hold a vote is the equivalent of a vote for same-sex “marriage.”

The D.C. Council’s disastrous step is likely only the first of others. A majority of Council members have indicated that they plan to support a bill later this year to permit same-sex couples to officially “marry” in D.C.

Admirably, others in Congress have taken a proactive approach to counter the District’s efforts to dismantle the family. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), joined by more than 30 other congressmen, has just introduced the D.C. Defense of Marriage Act (H.R. 2608), which defines marriage in D.C. as “the union of one man and one woman.” If passed, the District would join 30 other states that have defined traditional marriage in their constitutions.

This is a battle we can ill afford to surrender. Traditional marriage has always been the backbone of our society, and study after study shows it serves as the best environment in which to raise children. As marriage is permitted to expand beyond the union of one man and one woman, its value will diminish and society as a whole will bear the consequences.

The clock on marriage is ticking. If you support marriage as God designed it, please urge your representative and senators to demand votes to overturn the D.C. Council’s same-sex “marriage” law and to pass the D.C. Defense of Marriage Act (H.R. 2608).
