Most Americans are Comfortable with Prayer

By Richard Land - Aug 10, 2011 - 2 -

Americans are a decidedly religious people. While there are certainly differences in our faith practices, most Americans call themselves Christian and at least loosely ascribe to the tenets of that faith. That’s why critics of The Response, a call for prayer and fasting sounded in Houston’s Reliant Stadium August 6, are missing the mark.

The Response was not the first time an elected official called the nation, deep in the throes of crisis, to a time of prayer and fasting. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, as well as other officeholders, also called the nation to prayer. To most Americans, a call to prayer is not all that unusual. It is a reasonable and justified activity in light of the situation we find ourselves in as a nation.

I talked about this issue during my broadcast of Richard Land Live!: directly from “The Response” event Saturday.

> “Fasting and prayer are religious exercises; the enjoining them an act of discipline. Every religious society has a right to determine for itself the time for these exercises, and the objects proper for them, according to their own particular tenets; and right can never be safer than in their hands, where the Constitution has deposited it.”

I appreciated your involvement in and your support of The Response. Grateful that SBC leadership could be counted on to get the point of Perry’s call to prayer - we are a nation in crisis and God’s forgiveness and favor are available to us thru prayer. God bless you. Praying for you.

I enjoyed the quote of Thomas Jefferson, but I have a hard time trusting his words.  Since he canme out with his own version of the Bible, he has not won my respect.

I may not be a follower of Governor Rick Perry, but we, as Christians, should stand up for Christ.  I applaud his efforts and wish him well.
