Protect Life in Health Care Reform

Dear Friends:
The Senate Finance Committee is currently mixing together the ingredients of Sen. Max Baucus’ (D-MT) health care reform bill. The Baucus plan is a prescription for health care disaster.
Most troubling, the Baucus bill would not protect life. It would allow government funding of abortion under health care, fail to safeguard conscience rights of health care providers, and open the door to rationing of care.
Other problems include a mandate that every American purchase health care insurance or else face a massive tax, a loss of senior benefits by cutting Medicare Advantage in half, and an increase in taxes for those with incomes less than $250,000, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
We hope that you are expressing your concerns about all of these issues to your senators, especially these attacks on the sanctity of human life.
As the Finance Committee wraps up consideration this week on more than 500 amendments, Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Mike Enzi (R-WY) will be offering amendments to explicitly exclude abortion funding from the plan and to include conscience protections.
We must—at a minimum—keep abortion out of health care reform.
If you share our concerns, please tell your senators to support the Hatch and Enzi amendments to prohibit abortion funding and provide consciences protections under health care reform. If your senator serves on the Finance Committee, he or she especially needs to hear from you today.
