SBC’s Land comments on Roberts’ confirmation

By staff - Sep 29, 2005 - comment

Upon the confirmation of Judge John Roberts as the 17th chief justice of the United States, Dr. Richard Land, president of Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, commented on the nominee and the hearing process.

“Chief Justice John Roberts has the judicial philosophy, intellect and dedication to be one of the great chief justices in our nation’s history. Chief Justice Roberts’ sterling performance in his confirmation hearings caused deep division among Democratic senators. Many of them were duly impressed with the judge’s testimony, while others felt an obligation to the radical, liberal interest groups who support them to oppose a marvelously qualified and gifted nominee. I commend the senators and the Senate for an orderly and judicious confirmation process. We can all hope that such behavior will become a habit in the future.”

The Southern Baptist Convention is America’s largest non-Catholic denomination with more than 16.3 million members in 43,024 churches nationwide. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is the SBC’s ethics, religious liberty and public policy agency with offices in Nashville, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C.
