Tobacco - Smoking Bans

By Jerry Price - Mar 13, 2006

Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan has had a policy since 2000 that banned all smoking on campus except in one designated area outside each building. Now the college is expanding their smoking ban to include campus parking lots and garages and any outdoor area not a part of a quarter-mile strip called Washington Square which runs through the middle of the school’s downtown campus. Spokeswoman Ruth Borger says, “This isn’t intended to punish anyone. We just want a healthier environment for our students and employees.” Those who violate the ban (students, staff or faculty) will be issued a citation by campus police requiring them to meet with either human resources or student judicial affairs. First citations will bring a verbal warning. Numerous citations will result in firing or suspension.
