Support Abstinence Education
- Mar 31, 2005 - comment
The Senate is expected to consider next week the Personal Responsibility and Individual Development for Everyone Act (S. 667), also known as PRIDE, to reauthorize welfare law. Included in present legislation is funding through Title V to states for abstinence-based sex education programs that adhere to strict requirements. (Please see the end of this Action Alert for the requirements.)
Unfortunately, Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) likely will introduce an amendment to weaken these requirements. Any attempt to reject or redefine abstinence-based education must be stopped.
Given that abstinence before marriage is God’s intended plan for healthy families and is the only certain way to prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies, it is incumbent that funding for abstinence education continue and Title V’s current language remain unaltered. Abstinence education’s already low funding must not be undercut. Sadly, the government spends $12 on “comprehensive” sex education for every dollar spent on abstinence programs.
If you agree with me about the importance of abstinence-only sex education, please call your Senators and tell them that you want them to vote for S. 667 with its current abstinence-only sex education requirements. You can reach them by calling the switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
Don’t let the Senate jeopardize the future of abstinence education. Call or e-mail today!
