The Coming Liberal Onslaught
- Nov 11, 2008 - 4
Last week, a majority of voters decided they wanted to give the Democrats a chance to fix our nation’s problems. Given the public’s loss of confidence in Republicans, the economy in a tailspin, families hurting, and grave foreign policy problems looming, the mood that gave the Democrats control of Congress and the White House is understandable.
Despite the many reasons the majority of voters decided to give Democrats so much power, there are many clear indications that this same majority is not ready for a far-left government. The majority rejected many Republican policies, but that does not mean they embraced liberal policies. One of the clearest signs of this is the passage of the three state marriage amendments that were on the ballots in Arizona, California and Florida.
Liberals in Congress should take heed. They have not been given a mandate to engage in broad, social changes just because they were favored by the voters in this election. Nevertheless, there are already clear signs that liberals plan to do just that on day one of the Obama presidency.
There is already talk of a presidential executive order to reverse President Bush’s order preventing the use of taxpayer funds to pay for abortions overseas. In addition, we can expect an extremely liberal Congress to push through as much of its extreme social agenda as possible. One of their first orders of business will be another bill to provide taxpayer dollars to fund the deliberate destruction of an unlimited number of human embryos for stem cell research. We also can expect the reversal of any new oil exploration plans and the introduction of a radical, massive government program to force companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There will also likely be early action to pass the Freedom of Choice Act, eliminating all restrictions on abortion, and we can expect early introductions and action on bills providing special protected status for homosexuals. Liberals also will likely move quickly to silence their critics by reinstating the Fairness Doctrine so that Americans will have a harder time finding out what they are doing.
The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission will work to prevent any policies or legislation that violate Southern Baptist positions and biblical values, from protection of every human being, to strengthening families from further government intrusion, to protecting the freedom of speech and religious practice, to protecting the poor from draconian governmental policies that drive jobs out of the country and raise the prices on everything in the name of redistribution and heavy-handed regulation.
In addition to our efforts, yours will be needed as well. There is no substitute for your voice. The ERLC will continue to send out our Action Alerts and our articles in FFV so you can know just exactly what is happening in Washington and where you are needed the most. It is imperative that you give prayerful consideration to every one of our communications so that you can determine how God would have you respond and help protect our nation from His further judgment.
We look forward to working with you in the coming year to help promote God-honoring values and to defeat the efforts of radical social liberals from taking our nation down a road that will lead to God’s dreaded judgment. Our nation can stand for what is right and do what is right if God’s people humble themselves before Him, call on Him to restore the land, and fulfill their God-given responsibilities as salt and light. May God grant it for His glory.

Barrett, thank you for your article “The Coming Liberal Onslaught”. It certainly seems that our nation is doomed to feel the impact of the elections. I am a pastor and I confess that I am sensing a need to be more engaged in addressing the moral and ethical decline of our nation more than any other time in my 37 years of pastoral ministry.
I am praying that grassroots political and social and moral conservatives will rise to their feet and stand firm. Our children’s and grandchildren’s future is in the balance. An Obama White House and a Democratic Congress could easily spell the end of this nation as we know it. I am concerned, but I am ready to do my part to help.
I will be looking to you and Dr. Land and men like you to help guide me…and others like me…that we might do the right thing in the right way.
May God help us!
Mayh God bless America!

Evangelical Christian voters supported the previous Republican administration and legislature. This “conservative onslaught” has been a tragedy of deficit spending, militarism, torture, and greed-driven deregulation.
Please note that the number of abortions started to decrease during the Clinton administration. This has not accelerated in the Republican era. The administration’s focus has been to enrich the wealthy and unleash greedy economics. Abortion was always an afterthought to ensure the Christian vote.
Please read of Karl Barth’s exhortations to the Church to avoid grasping at earthly power (Constantinism). I suggest “Against Hegemony” by Gorringe. Or read “The Gospel and Politics” by John MacArthur:

By the way, I voted for Ron Paul. However, your equating ‘liberal’ to ‘immoral’ demonstrates a lack of understanding of liberal compassion.

Barrett Duke,
Your comment on the past election cycle is astute and pragmatic. The many reasons for the majority vote being cast for the Democrats essentially reduces to values wherein my values are more important than those established by God. The ‘me first’ syndrome, which has gripped our nation, speaks loudly to the commitment that government is my care taker. The antipathy against same sex marriage is more traditional than conviction to the tenets of God. The elected and majority winning party has been given the authority to enact all that they have made clear to be their direction of change.
Christians must be made knowledgeable of the tenets of God and the result when we fail and act against them; our pulpits must be on fire with the Gospel of Jesus Christ defining good and evil in our everyday acts.

This litany of unsubstantiated rumours, hysterical overreaction and fearmongering misrepresentation is typical of the Republican campaign. It may well be the reason that that a majority lost faith in that party. Until you have something REAL to whine about, [try January] at least try not to fabricate straw men to kick.
