The First 100 Days
- May 5, 2009 - 4
No matter who occupies the White House or which party controls the Congress, Americans of faith would be wise to make it a habit to pray for our nation. Whether we are enjoying calm in times of prosperity or enduring the tumult that comes with uncertain times, most Americans recognize that our future rests in God’s hands. And there is no time better to look to God than when we consider some of the decisions made during the first 100 days of the Obama administration.
We are reminded of His sovereignty as we anticipate the National Day of Prayer on May 7. The annual commemoration was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. With the challenges facing our families, our communities, and our nation, coupled with the biblical directives for us to remember before God those who are in authority over us, consistent, earnest prayer is definitely in order.
The ERLC’s Dr. Richard Land recently spoke at the Mega Metro pastor’s conference in Colorado Springs, giving his perspective on the first 100 days of President Barack Obama’s administration. His notes on the subject are available on both Foreign Policy (160 MB PDF) and Domestic Policy (152 MB PDF)
In reviewing what is transpired over the the past 100 days and considering the state of the culture, we should be compelled to pray and pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Please join us Thursday, May 7, for the National Day of Prayer, as we start a healthy and God-honoring habit of praying for our nation.

Obama and his gang were voted into office by 67 million Americans, many of whom claim to be Bible Believing, Born Again Christians in the Southern Baptist Convention. Without remorse or hesitation, they gave a thumbs-up, support for a political party and its presidential candidate that openly promotes abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, plus many more moral and traditional values established by Scripture and our Founding Fathers without a word of admonishment or education from our pulpits in that we are held accountable for every idle word we utter such as casting a vote in support of evil. How can God bless such a people? God’s advice for the condition of our nation is not that we pray for Him to make change, but 2nd Chronicles 7:14 14If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Although I am a Progressive Christian, I have gained a lot of respect for your opinion even when I disagree. i wish, you would work to bring down the negative level of rhetoric that the ultraconservative talk show hosts like Limbauch are using.
It is not just inflamatory and disrespectful but subtely White Supremicist and verges on hate mongery. I think your voice would soften their tone and make them be more objective in their message.

A comment to those who want to call themselves progressive Christians: God is the same today, as He was yesterday and will be tomorrow. His Word is the absolute Truth. The enemy of our soul, the sly old fox that he is, a wolf in sheeps clothing, would have us believe that the straight and narrow is just too uptight and would turn everything around on it’s head to make what is Holy to seem prejudice and hateful. No matter how hard we want to, our human nature, the lust of our flesh can not sugar coat or make sin be anything but what it is, sin. It is the signs of the times, where good will be bad and what is wrong, will be right. We need to detest sin as God the Father does and always love the sinner. Love to the point of earnestly seeking the lost to be brought to the Truth and experience true freedom in Him.

Dr. Land - thanks for this information. I certainly appreciate your efforts and dedicated hardwork to keep Christians informed on matters of the faith in government and society.
I have a great deal of respect and godly admiration for you.
Thanks for being “the Voice of the SBC” (as far as I am concerned). Have a great Thursday…National Day of Prayer.
