Mike Johnson on Reelection

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 3, 2025—Brent Leatherwood, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, today congratulated Speaker Mike Johnson on his reelection as Speaker of the House of Representatives, while also urging Southern Baptists to pray for him as he leads.

“I want to first offer my personal congratulations to Mike Johnson on his election as Speaker. Leadership is a challenge in any moment, but this next session of Congress will be especially difficult as he seeks to build consensus on a number of issues.

“Speaker Johnson has demonstrated noteworthy conservative leadership, working to build agreement on issues that have often divided us. He deserves our earnest prayers, along with all of our political leaders, as many significant decisions lie ahead about America’s future and its role in the consequential events occurring across the globe.

“Speaker Johnson subscribes to the principles that are dear to so many Southern Baptists, has an abiding devotion to our convention of churches, and has a deep pride in America. There is no doubt these ideals will help guide his actions in his role as speaker of the House.”

Johnson previously served as a member of the board of trustees for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission from 2004 to 2012.
