Russell Moore Comments on Supreme Court’s Decision to Strike Down Massachusetts Buffer Zones

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 26, 2014Russell D. Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, commented on the U.S. Supreme Courts unanimous decision Thursday to strike down a Massachusetts law that created buffer zones around abortion clinics in the case McCullen v. Coakley.

The Supreme Court ruled that the law, which created a 35-foot buffer zone around abortion clinics to keep demonstrators away from patients, violated the First Amendment.

I’m thankful for the Supreme Court doing the right thing, recognizing freedom of speech and freedom of dissent, Moore said. Those of us who are pro-life have constitutional guarantees embedded in the First Amendment, along with everyone else. This was a good decision, and I am cheered that it was a unanimous decision.

The Southern Baptist Convention is Americas largest Protestant denomination with more than 15.8 million members in over 46,000 churches nationwide. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is the SBCs ethics, religious liberty and public policy entity with offices in Nashville, Tenn. and Washington, D.C.
