Washington, D.C., July 23, 2015Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, will interview Jeb Bush before a sold-out crowd of 13,000 evangelical pastors and leaders in Nashville, Tennessee, Aug. 4, at Bridgestone Arena. The event will also feature a video interview between Russell Moore and presidential candidate Marco Rubio.
What has become clear in the past several years is that evangelicals are tired of sloganeering and are looking for concrete strategy, Moore said. Evangelicals realize they can no longer consider themselves part of some silent majority, where our First Amendment freedoms are assumed and guaranteed. Instead, evangelicals want to know which candidates offer a clear, coherent vision of religious liberty and have a plan to defend it when the very idea is contested in American politics. Evangelicals are looking for leaders who not only understand their convictions about human dignity and family stability but have plans to address them, and this event will provide the opportunity for precisely this kind of discussion with some of the leading presidential candidates, and I am greatly looking forward to it.
This ERLC civil forum discussion is open to press and is part of the Send North America Conference, an event designed to rally and equip evangelical pastors and leaders. It is presented by two Southern Baptist organizations, the North American Mission Board and the International Mission Board. The 13,000 conference attendees span all ages and backgrounds and come from over 800 churches across 49 different states.
The leading candidates from each major party were invited to this event. Within the crowded Republican field, beginning May 1 invitations were issued to those polling at 10 percent or higher in the Real Clear Politics national average up to one month before the event.
