Big Picture: Psalm 139 reveals the relationship between the glory of God and the sanctity of life by showing how we are known by God, created by God, and judged by God. If God is the author of life, then it changes how we understand issues related to the sanctity of life like abortion.
Point 1: We are Known by God (139:1-12)
- Key idea: God’s comprehensive knowledge and presence of humanity is amazing
- What it says:
God’s unsearchable knowledge of us is amazing (1-6)
God’s personal presence with us is universal (7-12)
- Why it matters:
Life has purpose because God knows us
Life has purpose because God is with us
- What to do:
Take comfort in God’s knowledge of us by resting in God’s providence
Take courage in God’s knowledge of us by defending the sanctity of life
Point 2: We are Created by God (139:13-16)
- Key idea: In the womb, God shapes our form and shapes our future
- What it says:
God creates our form even when no one else can see it (13-15)
God creates our future even when no one else can know it (16)
- Why it matters:
If God shapes our form in the womb, then he has authority over our life
If God shapes our future in the womb, then he has authority over our life
- What to do:
If God shapes our form in the womb, we should seek to protect life in the womb
If God shapes our future in the womb, we should seek to protect life at all stages
Point 3: We are Judged by God (139:17-24)
- Key idea: God knows our thoughts and will hold us accountable for our life
- What it says:
Because God knows our thoughts, he will hold others accountable (17-22)
Because God knows our thoughts, he will hold us accountable (23-24)
- Why it matters:
It is right and good for God to hold others accountable for injustice
It is right and good for God to hold us accountable for injustice
Only those who look to Christ will be forgiven for their injustice
- What to do:
Call on God to expose injustice in others and bring transformation
Call on God to expose injustice in our lives and bring repentance
Conclusion: Because we are known, shaped & judged by God, the sanctity of life matters
