WASHINGTON, D.C., April 28, 2015Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, commented on the U.S. Supreme Courts oral arguments heard today addressing the future of marriage.

I dont think the Court should redefine marriage, because I dont think the Court invented marriage in the first place. The action of finding some illusory 14th Amendment right to same-sex marriage in the Constitutiona right unknown not only to Constitution’s drafters and ratifiers but to every generation of this country and every other until the most recent yearswill have deep and wide consequences, for the stability of families and for freedom of religion. I hope the Court does the right thing and stays within the limits of its authorityrecognizing that the state did not create the family, and cannot recreate it.

Moore posted a blog with his reflections from the Supreme Court sidewalk this morning at “Moore to the Point.”:http://www.russellmoore.com/2015/04/28/reflections-from-the-supreme-court-sidewalk/

Moore and the ERLC hosted a time of prayer for marriage today in preparation for the oral arguments and led a #PrayForMarriage campaign asking other Christians and churches to do join them in prayer.

The Southern Baptist Convention is Americas largest Protestant denomination with more than 15.8 million members in over 46,000 churches nationwide. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is the SBCs ethics, religious liberty and public policy agency with offices in Nashville, Tenn., and Washington, D.C.
