A Letter to Oppose Attacks on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act

Letter sent to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader McCarthy December 6, 2022

The below letter was sent to the Speaker of the House and the Minority Leader on December 6, 2022, to address ongoing concerns with legislation that undermines RFRA. The bill mentioned in this letter – the “Do No Harm Act” – seeks to weaken religious freedom protections for millions of Americans by amending the RFRA to provide exemptions to various parts of federal law, including statutes governing equal employment and nondiscrimination standards, health care, federal contracts and grants, and government services.

More specifically, the letter calls for members of the House of Representatives to vote against the bill, further stating:

“This bill, even as amended, does not provide meaningful protection for those that maintain a biblical view of marriage. Instead, it invites further confusion and litigation without offering sufficient security for the many faith-based organizations serving their communities outside of ‘solemnizing or celebrating marriages.’”

The ERLC continues to advocate against harmful legislation like this and encourage legislators to protect the full application of RFRA in all contexts, as currently provided in existing law.
