A Letter in Support of Faith-Based Student Organizations

Letter sent to U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce on September 27, 2024

Faith-based student organizations on college campuses should be able to continue to serve their students and communities without fear of discriminatory exclusion.

In recent years, the ERLC has submitted public comments to voice opposition to the Biden Administration’s anti-religious liberty regulatory actions that often threaten religious organizations on college campuses. Alongside that advocacy, the ERLC has supported the Equal Campus Access Act, which ensures that religious student organizations are given the same rights and privileges as secular organizations without being forced to compromise their beliefs.

The language of this bill sends the important message that the identity, presence, and voice of religious student organizations from all faiths matter on public college and university campuses. The ERLC joined a letter alongside other faith-based partners celebrating the passage of this important bill in the House of Representatives within a larger piece of legislation.

“Faith-based student organizations should not face discrimination on college campuses solely because they require their leaders to agree with their core religious beliefs. Basic religious freedom—and common sense—require that a religious group be permitted to require that its leaders agree with its religious message and mission.”
