One alarming trend at the intersection of religious liberty and child welfare has been a push to exclude people of faith and those that hold to biblical views of gender and sexuality from participating in the foster care and adoption systems.
In 2023, the Biden administration proposed a new rule that sought to make “affirming” a child’s chosen gender identity an aspect of a foster or adoptive parent’s ability to provide “safe and appropriate” care.
The ERLC submitted public comments pushing back on this rule and were glad to see some of our concerns addressed in a final rule released in 2024.
