What is the Research Institute, and what is the function of the fellows?

The Research Institute provides a collaborative space for Southern Baptist researchers and academics. Its members, known as research fellows, serve as resources on theological and policy matters in their areas of expertise. These research fellows serve as a think tank, and assist the ERLC on specific projects, helping produce materials that address the moral, public policy, and religious liberty issues of concern to Southern Baptists. These resources include books, booklets, pamphlets, white papers, videos, and other media.

The fellows are some of the most respected scholars in Southern Baptist life. Fellows must:

  • 1. Affirm, by their signature, the Baptist Faith and Message confessional statement.
  • 2. Be an active member in good standing of a local Southern Baptist church.
  • 3. Be a person of godly Christian character.
  • 4. Adhere to the basic moral commitments of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
  • 5. Be actively involved in the study of moral, public policy, and religious liberty issues.

Research fellows are not compensated by the ERLC for serving as fellows, nor do their views necessarily represent those of the ERLC.

Emeritus fellows are a special category of research fellows recognized for their long-standing commitment to the work of the ERLC.

Senior fellows are contracted members of our research team who serve as staff experts in one of our designated areas of work: life, religious liberty, marriage & family, and human dignity.
