Letter in support of the reauthorization of USCIRF

Letter sent to U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on July 15, 2024

USCIRF

The ERLC as part of the IRF Roundtable’s Congressional Working Group has circulated and sent a letter asking the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to reauthorize the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).

This is an informal group of 218 organizations and individuals who are scholars, religious and secular leaders, human rights advocates, and practitioners writing to express gratitude for the continued support of USCIRF. Established by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 (IRFA), USCIRF plays a vital role in promoting religious freedom globally and advocating for those facing persecution or discrimination based on their beliefs.

The letter explains that:

“From our various experiences, we’ve seen the Commission play a vital role as a pillar of U.S. foreign policy infrastructure by reporting on those around the world who suffer for their beliefs, conscience, or religion. Robust reporting products, advocating for prisoners of conscience, and resources such as a database of prisoners of conscience and victims of persecution are essential tools used by civil society advocates to advance this fundamental human right.

With limited time before USCIRF sunsets at the end of September 2024, it is imperative that H.R. 7025 be scheduled for a final vote immediately so it can proceed through the Senate and be signed into law.”
