WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 6, 2024—ERLC President Brent Leatherwood comments on yesterday’s election results, including the abortion ballot initiatives in 10 states.
“The ERLC brings the gospel to bear on the important issues being debated in the public square, regardless of who occupies the White House, or which party controls Congress.
“Voters have decisively returned Donald J. Trump to the White House. We will work diligently with his incoming administration to advance the protection of religious liberty, defend marriage and family, and push forward the cause of human dignity. Traveling alongside these priorities are our pro-life convictions, which remain a top priority for Southern Baptists. We are hopeful for what can be accomplished in the next four years and will work with the Trump administration and members of the 119th Congress to make real headway on issues of importance to Southern Baptists.
“As we process the abortion ballot initiatives from across the country, it is obvious that there is a critical need, not only in policy but at a more basic level, in individual hearts and consciences, for a better understanding of the humanity of preborn children. Voters in Florida, South Dakota, and Nebraska rejected pro-abortion measures, showing there is a path forward for the cause of life. That said, the reality is, the majority of states with such initiatives chose a deadlier path. Preborn children are in danger, and we will work with our churches and partners to oppose and combat this urgent cultural crisis.
“We will pray for President-elect Trump, all of our leaders in Washington, and our nation, and will continue to assist our churches in bringing the hope of the gospel to the public square.”
