NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 22, 2015Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, will present the ERLC report at the “annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention”:http://www.sbcannualmeeting.net/sbc15/default.asp and will join a first-ever presidential panel discussion on The Supreme Court and Same-Sex Marriage: Preparing Our Churches for the Future.
The panel will seek to prepare Southern Baptists regardless of how the U.S. Supreme Court rules, both in terms of how they may remain faithful to the Bibles teaching on marriage and how they may effectively minister to a world that increasingly does not share the same understanding of marriage.
The discussion will be moderated by Ronnie Floyd, president of the SBC, and will take place June 17 at 3:35 p.m. EST following the ERLC presentation and report which is scheduled for June 17 at 3:10 p.m. EST at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Regardless of how the Supreme Court decides on the issue of marriage, Southern Baptists will remain steadfast, Moore noted. As Christians, we believe that the state did not create the family, and cannot recreate it, so we appeal to the Supreme Court to recognize and to stay within the limits of its authority. But regardless of how the Court rules, the church will have to learn to engage a culture with the gospel in which we cannot assume people share our same understanding of marriage. As we seek to help equip churches in our denomination for this task, Im thrilled to join this discussion and think through what gospel faithfulness looks like in our ever-changing culture.
Additional presidential panelists include:
R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Rosaria Butterfield, Author, Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert and Openness Unhindered
