WASHINGTON, July 26, 2017—Dr. Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, offered comments today on reports that President Donald Trump plans to appoint Kansas Governor Sam Brownback to the post of Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.
“Governor Sam Brownback is an outstanding choice to serve as the next Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. This ambassadorship is a key piece in our nation’s responsibility to act on behalf of the persecuted around the world, one that requires a seasoned, respected leader who brings conviction and gravity to the work of this crucial post. Governor Brownback is exactly this kind of leader. While in the Senate, Brownback was heroic on the crisis in Darfur, in dealing with AIDS in Africa and advocating on behalf of persecuted religious minorities. He will be an exceptional Ambassador. He has my prayers and pledge of full cooperation, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead. We need all the diplomatic and intellectual power we can muster in addressing these critical matters of human rights and global security. I urge the Senate to confirm Governor Brownback without delay.”
