What does the ERLC do in Washington, D.C.?

The ERLC’s public policy team works in Washington, D.C., on behalf of 12.9 million Southern Baptists in 46,000 churches and congregations, advocating before Congress, the White House, and the courts on issues that Southern Baptists care about. Each of these issues fall into the ERLC’s four main policy areas: life, religious liberty, marriage and family, and human dignity.

Through the ERLC’s work, it assists the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government in understanding the concerns of Southern Baptists, provides resources regarding issues of importance, and encourages the government to pursue policies in line with the views expressed by Southern Baptists and oppose policies that would bring harm to churches.

As examples of what this type of advocacy and educational work entails, the public policy team will often partake in meetings and briefings on Capitol Hill, file public comments in response to federal rulemaking, write and join letters to elected officials and leaders, distribute ethical and theological resources, push forward priorities in federal funding and reauthorizations, and review legislation both prior to and after being filed to address any concerns in what may be potentially made into law.
