Recently, Dr. Gary Hollingsworth joined key faith leaders in sending a letter to President Trump in support of Congressman Mark Walker’s confirmation as International Religious Freedom (IRF) ambassador-at-large.
This short letter from faith leaders commends the president’s general prioritization of religious liberty, while citing that seven months have passed since Congressman Walker’s nomination. It briefly touches on the importance of international religious freedom around the world, which necessitates urgent action to confirm Walker. This letter also affirms the congressman’s qualifications to serve in the role.
“Across the globe, people of faith endure relentless persecution, imprisonment, and death. Congressman Walker, a former minister with expertise in Intelligence and Counterterrorism from his congressional service, is exceptionally qualified to advise you and Secretary Rubio on confronting these atrocities.
His confirmation is essential to advancing this vital mission.
We are eager for Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch to prioritize Ambassador-Designate Walker’s nomination for the committee’s next hearing.”
Ambassador-Designate Mark Walker, a fellow Southern Baptist and former Member of Congress, is well-qualified to lead in this role. He brings a unique balance of pastoral experience and legislative leadership to this State Department post. Having served 16 years in ministry, Walker has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to faith and service. During his tenure in Congress, he was recognized for his efforts to build coalitions and earned a reputation for defending religious liberty and human rights, the kind of moral clarity and conviction the position requires.
The ERLC previously urged the Trump administration to nominate a qualified ambassador-at-large for International Religious Freedom and has continued to advocate for Walker’s confirmation since appointed. It is time for Congress to do their part by moving swiftly to confirm President Trump’s nominee to this critical post.
