Canon and Culture

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 28, 2014 Canon & Culture: Christianity & the Public Square, a new blog dedicated to informing and equipping men and women on great public issues of the day, will launch today on “canonandculture.com”:http://www.canonandculture.com/ and erlc.com, the official website of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The blog will contain essays that engage broad elements of culture written by a diverse group of authorsincluding Southern Baptist leaders, established and emerging scholars, think-tank experts, policy specialists and public intellectuals. Current plans include new content on Tuesday and Thursday of each week.

The mission of Canon & Culture is two-fold: to inspire a rising generation of Southern Baptists and like-minded evangelicals interested in these crucial issues of our day and to encourage and foster reflection of the Christian mind on the public square.

Canon & Culture will serve as an online forum that promotes Christian reflection on issues in the public square, whether that be aesthetics, vocation, politics, public policy, education, philosophy, ethics, technology, culture or the common good.

Russell Moore, president of the ERLC, will serve as the publications editor-in-chief. He comments on the new initiative:

The aim of Canon & Culture is not to be just another publication, but to be a tool for spiritual warfare. Each generation faces new, complex questions about how to be faithful to the mission of Christ. Canon & Culture recognizes that this task requires a band of joyful warriors devoting themselves to asking hard questions, and thinking deeply about difficult issues all from a kingdom-focused grid.

Andrew Walker, ERLCs director of policy studies and managing editor of Canon & Culture comments on the launch:

Im really excited to shepherd content to help equip and inform our brothers and sisters in Christ on today’s most pressing issues. In a day like ours, its necessary that evangelical Christians reflect critically on the impact that culture has on the church and vice versa.

In addition, there will be an accompanying podcast published once or twice a month with interesting thinkers on similar subjects that will appear on canonandculture.com. The podcast will be hosted by ERLC Coalitions Director Matthew Hawkins, ERLC Communications Vice President Daniel Darling and Andrew Walker.

ERLC Executive Vice President, Phillip Bethancourt, will serve as executive editor and Karen Cole, senior editor for the ERLC, will serve as deputy managing editor.

The Southern Baptist Convention is Americas largest non-Catholic denomination with more than 15.9 million members in over 46,000 churches nationwide. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is the SBCs ethics, religious liberty and public policy agency with offices in Nashville, Tenn. and Washington, D.C.
