Standing for life in the upcoming election is vital in Nevada in light of a pro-abortion ballot initiative called the “Nevada Reproductive Rights Amendment.” If passed, this amendment would establish a “fundamental right to abortion” in the state’s constitution. It would ensure that Nevada remains one of the most pro-abortion states in the nation.
Why should Christians stand for life?
Christians are called to uphold the sanctity of life, recognizing that human life is sacred because every human being is created in the image of God (Gen. 1:27). Scripture affirms that God knows us before we are formed in the womb (Jer. 1:5) and that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by him (Ps. 139). Christians guided by the truths of God’s Word should recognize the threat abortion represents for our preborn neighbors and should stand for life.
Standing for life in Nevada’s election
A “no” vote prevents abortion from being enshrined into the constitution as a fundamental right. Nevada currently allows abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.
A “yes” vote supports amending the Nevada Constitution to establish a “fundamental right to abortion performed or administered by a qualified healthcare practitioner until fetal viability,” or when determined by a physician, it is needed to protect “the life or health of the pregnant patient, without interference from the state or its political subdivisions.” Almost all abortions would be allowed under this amendment, even late-term abortions. The amendment only provides an exception if there is a “significant likelihood of the fetus’ sustained survival outside the uterus without the application of extraordinary medical measures.”
