NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 12, 2017—Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, applauded the signing the “Tennessee Infants Protection Act” (SB 1180/HB 1189) by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam. This bill, passed on May 3 by the Tennessee legislature, will prohibit abortions in the state of Tennessee after 20 weeks.
In response to the approval of this bill, Moore said:
"I am grateful to Governor Haslam for signing this legislation that will save lives in Tennessee. This law represents the culmination of years of hard work by individuals at the grassroots level, state legislators, and tireless advocates who are all dedicated to the pro-life cause. While far more can be accomplished in our society to protect the lives of the unborn, I am proud to note that Tennessee–under the leadership of Governor Haslam–has gone from an abortion destination to a state that is leading the effort to promote a culture of life."
On May 1, the Tennessee state Senate voted 27-3 to approve the measure, and on May 3, the Tennessee state House voted 68-18 and provided final legislative approval.
